POTW – September 21, 2015

Kent DuFault’s words on my image. He is authorised person who picks the ‘Photograph Of The Week’ at Light Stalking, Australia.

This week the Photograph Of The Week goes to Bhushan Shikhare for his image, “Woodcutter at Sunset”. There is no denying the immediately visual impact of this image. It’s eye-catching. However, it also incorporates one of my other favorite elements in a photograph, and that is a sense of mystery. The color and composition lend to a feeling of exotic location. The ax laying across the Wood Cutters shoulders is what really cements this image into the great category. I understand that Bhushan cloned in an extra bird, and I’m ambivalent as to whether that was an improvement. The image is composed in an almost perfect Golden Spiral.

Grey Heron

Grey Heron

The Grey Heron: Photographed at Bhigwan. Bhigwan is a small dusty town on the border of Pune and Solapur district in Central Maharashtra, India. South of Bhigwan town, exists a widespread backwater formed due to a man made dam built on the Bhima river. The dam is called as Ujni dam. There are two areas where one can see the migratory water birds. 1) Diksal-Parewadi area and 2) Dalaj – Kumbharwadi area. From here, one can hire a small fishing boat to locate exotic species
such as flamingo etc. The grey heron, is a wading bird of the heron family. Found throughout Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is a large bird, standing up to 100 cm (39 in) tall and measuring 84–102 cm (33–40 in) long with a 155–195 cm (61–77 in) wingspan. The body weight can range from 1.02–2.08 kg. Its plumage is largely grey above, and off-white below. Adults have a white head with a broad black supercilium and slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head. It has a powerful, pinkish-yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks. The call is a loud croaking. Gray Heron breeds in colonies in trees close to lakes, the seashore or other wetlands. It builds a bulky stick nest.
